Lyons named for Australian U19s Tour of Sri Lanka

After a breakout season, young Ghost Grace Lyons has been rewarded with national U/19s selection

Little more than two weeks after they were running the drinks for the Australian Women’s team at Manuka Oval, ACT Meteors young guns Amy Hunter and Grace Lyons have earned Australian colours of their own, with the pair named in the Australian squad for the multi-format Under-19 series in Sri Lanka in late March and early April.

Hunter was named in the Team of the Tournament after the Under-19s Female National Championships played in Brisbane in December, and says the call-up was unexpected.

“I got the call last Thursday, and there were a few tears, I definitely cried,” Hunter said.

Hunter says the tears of joy were shared with her parents in North Queensland, as the celebrated the next step on her cricket journey since moving to Canberra to play with the Meteors this summer.

“It definitely feels like all the hard work I’ve put in has been worth it, but it also feels like it’s the start of hopefully so much more to come.”

Being named alongside Meteors teammate Lyons is just as exciting, with the tour squad comprising 15 players from all six states and the ACT.

“It's great to have Gracie in the squad with me, I’m really excited to go away with her and experience that together,” Hunter said.

“I’ve never been overseas, so that experience is what I’m excited for this year, as well as playing cricket in another country. I can’t wait.”

Hunter and Lyons, both 18, are fresh faces amongst the Meteors squad this season and have both played key roles for the team across the season.

In her rookie WNCL season, Hunter has had the opportunity to take the new ball at points of the season, notably taking the scalp of destructive South African international Lizelle Lee when the Meteors hosted Tasmania.

Lyons, also in her rookie season, has taken to the difficult gig of opening the batting with open arms, regularly making starts and a top score of 33 for the season. She has also been proven to be a safe set of hands behind the stumps with four catches and one stumping for the season.

The Australian Under-19s team will be coached by former Australian cricketer and Cricket Australia National Development Lead Kristen Beams.

Australia will play against Sri Lanka and England in a tri-series format, including four T20s, with the first on March 28, before two One-Day matches in April.

Kristen Beams, Australian Women’s Under-19 head coach, said:

“The series in Sri Lanka will give the squad the chance to play in a multi-format series and challenge them to adapt to different conditions.

“The T20 matches will provide the squad with a great development opportunity ahead of the Under-19 T20 World Cup and we're also excited about the 50-over matches.

“We are also looking to give players a chance to develop their leadership skills across the series.”

Terrific Tanveer Grabs Four On International Debut

Shock debutant Tanveer Sangha rips through the Proteas with four wickets in Australia's huge 111-run victory

Mitch Marsh has produced a blistering captain's knock and Tanveer Sangha made a dream debut as Australia crushed South Africa by a record 111 runs in the series-opening T20 clash in Durban.

Marsh thumped an unbeaten 92 off 49 balls and Tim David (64 off 28 balls) also joined in on the fun as Australia posted 6-226 at Kingsmead on Wednesday night (Thursday AEST).

In reply, South Africa were bowled out for 115 in 15.3 overs, with Sangha (4-31) and Marcus Stoinis (3-18) doing the damage.

Paceman Spencer Johnson (2-33 off 3.3 overs) was expensive on debut, but he fought back to claim two late wickets, including the scalp of opener Reeza Hendricks (56 off 43 balls).

Sangha wasn't even meant to be playing, but the late scratching of Adam Zampa due to illness resulted in the 21-year-old leg-spinner being rushed into the side.

It meant Australia fielded four debutants – Aaron Hardie, Johnson, Matt Short and Sangha.

Zampa is expected to be fit to return for game two, but Sangha's stunning debut means Australia now face a welcome selection dilemma.

Australia's victory was their largest ever in a T20 against South Africa, bettering the 107-run win in Johannesburg in 2020.

Their total was also the biggest for a T20 international at Kingsmead, eclipsing the 4-218 posted by England against South Africa in 2020.

"It's always nice to start a three-match series with a win, and my job is to score runs, so it was nice to get a couple," Marsh said on the broadcast after winning the player-of-the-match award.

"I thought Tim David was fantastic, the way he batted took the pressure off me.

"It was a really good partnership, and he batted beautifully."

The loss of Travis Head (6) off the third ball of the innings brought Marsh to the crease, and the first-time skipper went bang as Australia moved to 1-45 after just 2.3 overs.

Such was Marsh's power, he slugged Lizaad Williams (3-44) out of the ground and into oncoming traffic in the fifth over.

Australia were in cruise control at 1-69 in the fifth over, but the loss of Short (20 off 11), Josh Inglis (1) and Stoinis (6) in quick succession resulted in the visitors slumping to 4-77.

David and Marsh combined for a 97-run partnership to steady the ship.

Marsh's decision to open the bowling with Stoinis proved a masterstroke, with the allrounder snaring the scalp of Temba Bavuma in an over that cost just one run.

Sangha was introduced into the fray in the seventh over with South Africa at 2-53.

He snared his maiden T20 scalp with his sixth ball when Aiden Markram struck him straight to backward point.

And when Sangha sent Dewald Brevis and Tristan Stubbs packing in consecutive deliveries in the eighth over, South Africa's victory hopes were all but over.

"He's done that in the Big Bash and for NSW for the last couple of years," Marsh said of Sangha.

"He's a fantastic young talent. To come in and do that, he's got great character, and he's going to fit right into international cricket."

Australia entered the series without Pat Cummins (wrist), Mitchell Starc (groin), Steve Smith (wrist), Glenn Maxwell (ankle), Josh Hazlewood, Cameron Green and David Warner who were given extra time to recover from their respective injuries as the squad ramps up preparations ahead of October's ODI World Cup in India.

Despite not playing competitive cricket in almost 12 months, uncapped leg-spinner Tanveer Sangha has been picked for two crucial tours prior to the ODI World Cup

Young leg-spinner Tanveer Sangha has surged into World Cup calculations, today named in Australia's extended 18-player ODI squad ahead of the tournament starting in October.

The NSW and Sydney Thunder rising star has not played competitive cricket for almost 12 months owing to a stress-related lower-back injury suffered on the eve of last summer, however has been picked in the squad for a five-match ODI tour of South Africa and three-match tour of India.

Australia selectors have until September 28, the day following the third ODI in India, to trim the ODI squad down to 15 players, the maximum number allowed for the World Cup.

Alongside 21-year-old Sangha, Australia's other frontline spinners in the extended one-day squad are first-choice Adam Zampa, and Ashton Agar.

Should Australia take two frontline spinners to the World Cup as they did in 2019 (Zampa and Nathan Lyon), Sangha may have to edge out Agar for a ticket to the 2023 showpiece, although a spin trio may not be out of the equation on drier subcontinent wickets.

Long seen as an exciting spin prospect, Sangha's selection paves the way for an international debut after first being picked in an Australia squad for a T20 tour of New Zealand back in February-March 2021.

While he did not feature on that tour, selection for which was on the back of a breakout BBL|10 campaign, Sangha has since delivered further for the Thunder, taken 24 wickets in his first eight first-class matches, and impressed during a June 2022 Australia A squad tour of Sri Lanka.

Selection chair George Bailey said Sangha had long been flagged for higher honours and signalled that the leg-spinner was in line to debut at some stage during the upcoming tours.

"He's been on our radar for a long time," Bailey said.

"His Big Bash form when he's been fit and playing has been excellent so he's one that we're really impressed with (his) character, the way he prepares and thinks about the game.

"The common comment around Tanveer is that he's very mature on the field and a great thinker about how he goes about it.

"He had an unfortunate injury last year which meant that he lost a bit of game time, but the age he is and the skillset he has I don't think that's going to set him back much. It's great that he's back fit and available to play, and looking forward to him getting some opportunities on this tour as well."

Sangha last played top-flight cricket on August 30 last year, for Birmingham Phoenix in the UK Hundred.

In September 2022, after playing practice matches for NSW on the eve of the Marsh One-Day Cup, he felt something was not right when bowling.

"I was up in Coffs Harbour and I felt a bit of soreness and awareness, so I got a scan to check it out and see how bad it is," he told cricket.com.au months later.

"I just wanted to know if I could prioritise my match bowling and calm down a bit on training volume. But then I got the scan and it turned out to be much worse than I thought."

The injury saw him ruled out initially for "a few months", however that prognosis extended to the entire summer as he did not feature for NSW or Sydney Thunder across the 2022-23 season.

At the time Sangha predicted he had not spent more than a fortnight away from bowling in the previous eight years.

The 21-year-old has spent the past month in the US, as part of the Washington Freedom squad in the inaugural Major League Cricket season.

He replaced Sri Lankan leg-spinner Wanindu Hasaranga on the eve of the tournament, however did not feature in any matches for the franchise.

The NSW Breakers have announced their playing squad for the 2023/24 season, and it includes 4 Ghosts!

Congratulations to Lauren Cheatle, Hannah Darlington and Anika Learoyd on earning renewals, and to Ebony Hoskin on breaking into the squad for the first time after her debut last season.

The NSW Breakers have announced a 15-player squad for the 2023/24 Women’s National Cricket League (WNCL) season, with last summer’s debutants Ebony Hoskin and Isabella Malgioglio, as well as experienced Englishwoman Georgia Adams, joining the list for the first time.

Veteran Sarah Coyte, a marquee signing who won six WNCL titles with the Breakers earlier in her career, announced she was returning to NSW earlier this week.

The group will be supplemented by established superstars Alyssa Healy and Ashleigh Gardner, who alongside Phoebe Litchfield, have earned Cricket Australia contracts.

Cricket NSW Head of Elite Women’s Cricket Leah Poulton said the three newcomers and Coyte all brought a different skillset to help balance the squad.

“Obviously Sarah Coyte is a huge signing as the competition’s leading wicket-taker last season,” Poulton said.

“She brings a wealth of experience and knowledge that will help tremendously alongside young players like

“Isa is a leg-spinner who has come through the NSW Pathway system and made her debut for the Breakers at the end of last summer. Her contract is a credit to the work she has put in away from the professional set up and shows that we will recognise sustained success in Premier Cricket and competitions like our Premier Plus tournament.

“Georgia Adams is an extremely experienced top order batter and offspinner. We were looking to improve our depth at the top of the order and we are confident Georgia will add a lot of value in that area.”

As a further part of the list build for the upcoming summer, pace bowling all-rounder Maitlan Brown extended her contract by three years, while international bowlers

and Stella Campbell, and batter Saskia Horley, committed to NSW for two more seasons. Prodigious leg-spinner Jade Allen re-signed for a further year.

and Claire Moore were all already under contract and will return as the Breakers look to return to the WNCL finals for the first time since the 2019/20 season.

Veteran all-rounder Lauren Smith and medium pacer Emma Hughes were de-listed.

“We are delighted that we were able to re-sign Maitlan (Brown),

“We think we have built a strong and balanced squad under head coach Gavan Twining and having players of the calibre of Midge (Healy), Ash (Gardner) and Phoebe (Litchfield) when they can be around is great for any team.

“We’d also like to recognise the efforts of both Lauren and Emma over several seasons, and we look forward to seeing them as part of our WBBL programs with Lauren at Sydney Thunder and Emma with the Sixers.”

The squad will assemble at Cricket Central at the end of May to begin the pre-season phase of their training.

Steve’s appointment pays respect to the enormous talent that the Ghost's female players possess and have produced over the years. Senior players have responded with enthusiasm to his appointment. Australian Southern Star and Ghosts 1st Grader Hannah Darlington commented that “all of the Ghosts girls will benefit greatly from his expertise and coaching style. He will certainly assist in their development and preparing those heading to the next level.”

Young gun commits to the Thunder Nation until at least the end of WBBL|11

Sydney Thunder have received a boost in their quest for more WBBL titles with news that superstar Hannah Darlington has inked a three-year extension that will see the talented bowler at the club until at least the end of WBBL|11.

The deal continues the Thunder’s commitment to young home-grown talent, with the 20-year-old from Western Sydney having been a fan in the crowd at the team’s first ever WBBL match before signing a rookie contract as a 15-year-old.

The announcement comes as the Weber WBBL marks 100 Days to Go until the eighth edition of the world’s premier cricket league for women kicks off on October 13.

Despite her tender years, Darlington has already captained the Thunder and NSW, won a WBBL title, been named the WBBL|05 Young Gun and in the Team of the Tournament for WBBL|06 and 07.

The proud Kamilaroi woman has also played for Australia in T20 and ODI formats and said she was over the moon to secure her future.

“I was really excited to get offered a long term deal,” Darlington said.

“I think after spending five years at the club now since I was 15, it’s been a while but it’s a real honour to have that hard work pay off and allow me to stay with the club.”

Few players are more passionate about their team and their community as Darlington and she was quick to recognise the many factors that made staying in Lime Green well into the future a no brainer.

“We always speak about the Thunder Nation, our fans, our environment and I guess our home ground out at Blacktown is ten minutes down the road from where I grew up,” she said.

“It’s the team I supported, I was at the first ever game at Howell Oval and these are all the small things that make up the reasons why I love playing for this club.

“The support they’ve given me and everything we’ve been through, whether it was a title win, hubs, travelling – these things kind of stand out but it’s more the off field stuff and the community aspect that we have to our club.”

Greenies Make The Finals

Congratulations to our U/16 squad on progressing to the knock out stages of this seasons Green Shield.
The round games were highlighted by some suburb individual and team performances.
The boys face their biggest challenge yet this Sunday as they once again face Parramatta at Old Kings.

           Speak to your audience

You know your audience better than anyone else, so keep them in mind as you write your blog posts. Write about things they care about. If you have a company Facebook page, look here to find topics to write about

Take a few moments to plan your post

Once you have a great idea for a post, write the first draft. Some people like to start with the title and then work on the paragraphs. Other people like to start with subtitles and go from there. Choose the method that works for you.

           Don’t forget to add images

Be sure to include a few high-quality images in your blog. Images break up the text and make it more readable. They can also convey emotions or ideas that are hard to put into words.

           Edit carefully before posting

Once you’re happy with the text, put it aside for a day or two, and then re-read it. You’ll probably find a few things you want to add, and a couple more that you want to remove. Have a friend or colleague look it over to make sure there are no mistakes. When your post is error-free, set it up in your blog and publish.
